Shekul is a physician and epidemiologist whose research concerns why people do and do not reach health care — and what it costs them when they do not.
He trained in medicine at Guilin Medical University in China and in epidemiology at Independent University, Bangladesh, and is completing a Masters in Health Economics at the University of Dhaka. He founded The Ideology in 2026 after working across the three places where health evidence is made and used in Bangladesh: a national health information system, a clinical research organization, and a university.
His research sits at the intersection of access, equity and stigma. He is principal or co-investigator on funded studies of health-seeking behaviour among dialysis patients, of stigma and access barriers in coastal Bangladesh, and of the determinants of care-seeking among cancer patients — funded respectively by the Planning Division of the Government of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Medical Research Council and Independent University, Bangladesh.
He is the authorised signatory for both Ideology entities and holds overall responsibility for methodological and ethical standards across the institute's work.
